Welcome To Freaky Country
  • I think it was a less than magical night, we lost our softness thing and there was a lack of kindness, listening and rhythm.
  • Guests include Andy's Jayson and those two people from Queens who I really don't know so if some one wants to chime in with some names that would be cool.
  • Lisa G. had a cancelled sales meeting resulting in a great chopped vegetable platter and finger sandwich rolls and other goodies.  Supplimented by a terrible version of McDonalds Johnny ran for.  That just has some bad karma involved with it and it just doesn't belong.
  • You know you don't use your scanner enough when you go to scan this weeks setlist and last week's is still on the glass.
  • Pretty cold outside but crisp.  Lots of traffic on the way in and out of the city.
  • 8 teams tied for first in the NHL, NBA on strike, Cone signs 1 year, $8 million/year contract with the Yanks and I just finished Zen Guitar, a book which needs to be passed on to the rest of the band.

The Way of Zen Guitar is learned day by day, minute by minute, second by second, now, to eternity. There is no faster way.   Beginning students also commonly ask, "How long until I get my black belt?" They are told, they'll never earn a black belt so long as they ask that question. To be obsessed with the destination is to remove the focus from where you are.

In Zen Guitar, the black belt is not a goal or an end. At other schools, the black belt may signify ultimate achievement, but in Zen Guitar, it is only a point along the path. I have great respect for those who reach the black belt level; it takes sincere commitment. But the true Way of Zen Guitar asks black belt players to redouble their training until their belt becomes so worn and frayed it begins to lose color and returns to white. Only through completion of that circle--white to black, black to white--can one know the depth of the Way.

Excerpted from the introduction to Zen Guitar, available in hardcover at bookstores everywhere. Hardcover published by Simon & Schuster, paperback available from Fireside/Touchstone.

I disagree with TheGind, it may not have been a "magical" nite, but by no means was there "a lack of kindness, listening and rhythm." From the pre-Half Step Drums/Bass warm-up to the U.S. Blues, we were locked and groovy as Greg Brady in a bean bag chair. C.C. Rider was hot, as was most of the first set. The drummers were particularly good last nite. Very hard and precise (that's what she said). We also got the return of LarryB's guitar synth, which sounded pretty good. I won't argue that there wasn't a certain Skoppy skew in the room, but in the words of LarryB, "Ma Nish Ta Nah". You can't be too critical, you just have to go to every show. As far as the guests go, which included a pre-show visit by Mrs.Gibson bearing gifts and my friend Keith and his lovely sister-in-law, Sippy, and Jayson, there was a festive and appreciative vibe enveloping the room. Even Freakboy seemed sociable and gregarious, although he still has some bizarre attraction to going upstairs alone ( I don't think I ever really want to know what he does up there ). When he was with the rest of us, he came up big. I saw good singing & dancing, as well as a super kind McDonald's run, ( I disagree with TheGind again. There was nothing wrong with that fast food fare, it shouldn't be a weekly thing, but it certainly has it's place and worked perfectly last nite (say's my colon). Maybe TheGind won't be comfortable until he's slurping a bowl of miso with a shaved head, meditating in a rock garden.

McDonalds sucks. The jam diddn't. It was indeed a different feel, but if it was the same every week there would be no point. The first set was hot, the second suffered from post fast food dysplexia. John promised a dress(maybe even two)but did not deliver...I think Jason scared him.

So, Chrysler is no more, now merged with Daimler Benz to become DaimlerChrysler who's stock begins trading on the NYSE on Tuesday, November 17. What does that have to do with Deadstein one may ask. Not much except that it keeps me on the day job since we made the video and are staging the Event into the night so I'm afeared I'll miss a 3rd consecutive jam. We must carry on though, and I hope to rejoin the groove the following week. Keep on Truckin'...
