Unwrap each day like a freaky gift
Notes:

Another great freaky night of the freakiest place on earth, or at least on 38th street.  There was a lot of cool stuff going on and trying to remember it two night later may be difficult.

After the keying of Larry's car last he and I decided to park in lots.  He parked on 40th which was open past 11:00.  I on the other hand parked at the place on 38th that closes at 11 sharp.  Thanks to Larry, I remembered to get my car at the end of halftime.  It was a bummer but it was pretty quick and invigorating.  The worst thing is that it's so easy to forget about it.   It's going to happen some day.

The Freakboy had us all freaked up for the evening by supplying the prejam munch.  Corned beef and pastrami from the Carnegie Deli is almost as good as it gets, and it was GOOD!  There was talk of the prejam Gyro II as the main meal next week.  Who knows maybe we can pull it off.

Just as most of us were nicely satisfied with our culturally enhanced sandwiches in comes the culturally challenged Spillboy arriving in a rail-car with with Commandant Klinks bohemian daughter wrapped around his tattooed forearm.   She stated she had a problem with our Jewishness in a disturbing way but in the end, she seemed to like the three songs she and Kabalah Boy hung out for.  Whatever happened, there was a very freaky thing going on in a very unkind way.

Wah- Wah My Mutron III+Larry M. had some type of kid duty to attend to and couldn't make it until the end of the first set.  Coffee Boy Mitch was cool enough to sit in for the first half and provided a nice steadiness which we took advantage of.  This coupled with the missing Brotman made for a more structured and open environment and it's amazing how we fill in all the open pours of the music dermas.   Nooks and cranies are no match for Deadstein oleo.

I surprised Larry B. when I showed up with my new Mu-tron III+ Reissue that I picked up at the Philadelphia Guitar show.  I assume this will be a great effect for me and I'll explain why.  Like the Grateful Dead, this Mu-tron is sensitive, sophisticated and can't be fully enjoyed at first play.  I can tell, I am going to have to get used to it, dial it in for what it does well and we will have a good time fluctuating together.  The thing sounded real good in my bedroom but when it came to the jam I didn't do a good job of using it.  That's good, because the RP6, which I could tell is just a cheap thrill, was a blessing when I first played it. The Mu-tron on the other hand has more character that needs to be polished to bring out its grain.  It will add a new level of freakiness to the sound of Deadstein when used appropriately.   I finally felt comfortable with the sound I got out of it during the Shakedown Street.

First Set Comments:
  • The Me and My Uncle/Big River has an excellent beat and one of our better transitions.  Kevin was amazed by it and I think that overrates it because there is much further to go.  Transitions are one place where we still think and just don't play.  When we stop thinking through our transitions and just play them they will become great.
  • Stagger Lee was tough for me.  I had lot of problems remembering it.
  • Going against the list with the Music Never Stopped hurt us.  It was one of the worst Musics in a long time.
Half Time Eating Comments:
  • The Pronto Pizza we had for half time was the worst Deadstein food product we have ever ordered.  We got a Sicilian pizza with half sausage and it was the worst pizza ever.  The crust we totally soggy and gross, there was a lot of bad sauce and no cheese whatsoever except for a sprinkling of parmesan.  It wasn't even pizza.  It was almost similar to a Elio's frozen pizza but that would be doing do a disservice to Elio's.  Talking about it just makes you mad.  It's embarrassing for New York.
  • We had left over candy but not much food to speak of.  Thanks to Johnny for those sandwiches before the jam.  Without that we would have been lost.
Second Set Comments:
  • It didn't seem as if we were destined to play a second set.   Bloated and lethargic from an evening's worth of abuse and over indulgence left little hope of achieving Kevin's desires.  We never did play Kevin's set list but we did manage to play two good big numbers inspired by Michael's presence, a guy who really can really appreciate a hot Dead tune.  And you know, he can dance with the best of the freaks.  And it doesn't get much freakier than that and isn't that what it is all about.  Land of the Freak, home of the Freak.  Not much more to say than Freak.   It's pretty sad.  The universal antidote to writer's block and life, Freak.   You gotta love it, you gotta hate it, but you gotta play it to win.
  • We started the Shakedown about 5 minutes to 11:00 and ended the night just about as late as we have ever played during a normal jam.  After the very elongated, flowing and diverse Shakedown Street Larry M. commented "Think of what might have been."  He was right and it really makes you think and pay homage to the kindness we generate.  Super powerful, complex, endearing, humanistic music made at the drop of a hat is inspiring.  It has gotten me to play/practice more and buy new and improved stuff.  This in turn makes me a better musician and makes us all better.  The arrival of Scott's new drums will hopefully send him over the hump and to brighter pastures.  This is all having a great impact on Deadstein.  A spiraling evolution of freaky music which lifts you up, throws you for a loop a gently places you down from where you came.  You can't beat that.
  • The Cassidy was even great.  We played like we didn't want to stop.  All the playing in the second set had a strong verdé/pearl flavor to it.
Weather:
  • A beautiful night.

Even though this week at WWI was by far was the freakiest, suprisingly, the big news was the music. We had a phenomenal nite. The first part of the 1st set was given a booster shot of energy by CoffeeBoy. His rhythmic-perspective really helped us get off on the freaky foot, and we kept it going for the rest of the nite. All the tunes were really strong and solid. I enjoyed playing them as much as I'm enjoying the tapes. The music last nite flowed effortlessly; mission accomplished. Spillboy has apparently gone over the edge, his cries for help are chillingly loud and clear. His blatant exhibition of self-hate by hooking-up with some cootie-ridden Nazi chick and bringing her to Us was sickening. He better be having some crazy wiener-draining, latex-coated Gestapo sex with this skank, 'cause that's the only excuse I can understand. For his own good we should tell him next weeks jam is at Bellevue. Big thanks to Freakboy for not only being Deadstein's Kind-Concierge, but being the great little-buddy that he is to me. Thanks for making my life just a little bit easier. Freakboy's dancing last nite really celebrated the wackiness that is Deadstein; kudos' to you. The putrid pizza and late-leave made for an extra hard commute home and even harder wake-up. The only thing saving me right now is this raspberry-filled Krisy-Kreme doughnut in my left hand. (That's what she said!)

One of the all time freakiest nites. First Spilly arrives with his Nazi friend, we play powerful right from the get go. Especially good were the Sugaree (suprise, suprise)Gomorrah. We then proceed to have the worst excuse for pizza this side of your freezer. If that's their idea of well done Sicilian, I'd hate to see their thin and raw. At this point we are all overwhelmed by the craziness of the evening so far, and it looks like a 2nd set isn't in the cards. Michael arrives with a fresh shot of energy and a little motivation and were off to maybe the best 2 songs we have ever played. The Shakedown was long, fluid, explorational, and cooking and then when it looked to be all over we come up with an absolutely beautiful Cassidy. Kudos on an exzcellent evening!!!!!!!!!!

Hello again from the land of thin air and buffalo burritos. I'm just checking in on the freakiness and predictably, I'm not disappointed. I saw Phish last week and after cruising the lot scene for grilled cheese, I had a sudden wave of nostaglia (or maybe it was nausea) rush over me. As Kevin posted earlier, "I miss Jerry" too. I now have E-mail so try to send me some skop every now and then. paulpos@hotmail.com Freak on ;)

You want to talk freakshow. I think Davy hit it on the head when he came up with Freak Magnet. Because that is what we are. And freaks are what we attract. Woo.

Things started strange when I only turned on two of the three main lights downstairs. It enhanced the lighting in our part of the room due to the contrast with the dark rest of room. A much needed (little did we know) coating of deli meat started us on our way. And then the SpillBoy showed up with some freaky foreign chick with a self-proclaimed great voice. We're talking about yomica-touting, kaballah-boy showing off some scary off-the-boat German thing. I was impressed. The playing started and the songs were good. I wasn't able to distinguish the effect of Gind's new musical toy. Perhaps the future will have a say about that. When the music subsided it was decided that pizza is what we should do. Midtown and pizza don't mix. It is possible that we will never have pizza at WWI again. We're gotten to the point in which the comfort factor has exceeded our previous settings. Perhaps the round table has put us over the top. I don't know. I don't know. You stick around now it might show.

Well I don't know about you, but the anticipation of having both B's there at the same time was more than exciting for me. It didn't happen. But that's OK. Despite their key similarity, they are world's apart and the wackiness potential was perhaps better left untapped. We did get some interesting conversation out of the first B (i.e. the year 2000). That's good, because we certainly didn't get anything else from him. That is potentially a first. The second B inspired two songs after 11:00 which were played with zest and spring. A truly special evening indeed.

"Dazed And Confused" deffinetly was the tone of the evening. What a trip !!! Thanks to Coffee Boy for being there in Menakers absence in the first set. He didn't miss much playing for the 2nd set being that it only consisted of 2 tunes. But man, those were 2 BIG #'S. I thought the earlier start was a nice change. I still say eat Big early, play more later!!!! and later we did play. No curfew @ WWI or at least until I get the page "Where are you"? Kevy say's those tapes sound good, I best get a listen. OK onto Spillboy. Whats up with that boy? What do they teach in Kaballah University? He's got some explaining to do. Are those kind words about Freakboy really coming from Kev? Any more feedback re: 12/24? That fresh shot from Michael was some kick in the ass. zzzzzzzzzzzzz

X-Mas eve sounds great. Now back to the spill. I spoke with him yesterday. Now you must understand that I wasn't there for the Northern Eurpean portion of the evening so it is not really possible for me to pass judgement on the events. But, I know my Johnny, and even if I had no details, I could see how Deadstein could be shocked by him. My only surprise, is that it has taken this long to shock you! Story goes, she's from Denmark. I mean, you have to understand, that a rational for whatever happenned, that "she's from Denmark" is understood between Johnny and myself. He didn't see anything else unusual about the events. That's all I got from him, "she's from Denmark". The spill has always wanted to go to Denmark.......you can't critisize a guy for trying to realize his dreams?

You can test if she is from Denmark or the Gastapo by seeing if she can answer the following , "How may herring make up a gross?" If she can't answer that she is a spy.

I've been to Denmark, my mother always puts out a Danish for the Mah Jong Ladies and Verna VonSchtuztch is no delightful pastery.
