Next jam is next Tuesday, May 14, 2002 at Smash Studios.

Once again in the cool Smash Studio A on 36th Street.  Rich couldn't make it so I asked Bill Siegel of Carpetsteen and Everlounge fame to sit in on the piano.  It was nice to get his tickling of the keys into the room along with some of his background vocals.  Thanks for sitting in Bill, I glad it worked out.

It was another taping night.  This week went smoothly as I consolidated some equipment, used multiple inserts on the board and was able to leave my Mackie mixer at home.  I assume the tape worked and I'll get to it within the year.  These things just take so much time it's unbelievable.  Most of the music warrants it.

There were some good moments and some fair ones.  I liked our second set as we hit the five songs in it pretty well including a big Death and a big Morning Dew.  I was going for the early 70's type of setlist and these were just some staples from the great era.  I think only the Sugar Mag and Mason's were real bad and the Cumberland was just weak .  Other than those, most were good.  Andy and I switched off on the China Cat guitar parts which was cool. The Halfstep Bill sang on the side as we halfass with no drums but it had a pretty big jam in the end.  In addition, Dave played guitar and Andy played drums during the Come Together.  All in good fun, and isn't that what it is all about?

Till next Tuesday when we will have not Brotman and no Trister.  I can wait.

By the way, for all of you Elevensteen fans, which I know there are many, well maybe I don't know that, we are playing a gig at Bogarts in Bayridge, Brooklyn this Saturday night. This is a night filled only Eleven music playing a full night of electric sounds. Come out if you can. When I get the adress and specifi time I'll post it, as if it matters.

I booked room B, the infamous sunset room of the studio, since we will be less than stacked for next week. First things first. The disc I listened to last night was a remarkable achievement in stereo-phonic sound. The Terrapin>PITB>UJB>China Doll>PITB was amazing, with the added background vocals filling it up nicely. The rough mix of the last 4 songs from last week is pretty grate to boot!!! Last night's jam held some of the most spectacular playing I have ever been a prt of. Ok, the 1st half hour was necessary to warm up, but it was only Truckin that showed any weaknesses afterwards.El Paso through Rider and then Death Don't to the end were a tour de force. I think we did the best renditions of GDTRFB and NFA ever!!!

After the gig, Gind and I had to say a prayer, and then go the wrong way on a one way street dodging Garbage trucks and minivans til we hit the avenue. Larry said "This is like a bad video game." What a situation that was!

Just as a way to take a little creidt for some of the grooviness, if I can and I mean a little, I have been playing a lot of mandoline over the past 3 months and that quick little rhythmic chop on the mandolin comes out in some of my guitar playing. Sometimes I sense it behind some of the constant simple rhythms I'll play. Also with fewer people and everyone in a defined role we are sticking to our guns better. Supporting instead of slinging. As a matter of fact, I don't play too many notes anymore so that's gotta help.

Gind, I have noticed it too, yet I thought that the reason was 2 fold: since you have been recording, you have not brought in that big bag of effects, letting you focus on the playing rather than some of the gizmos. AND, without all the extra musicians we had for some time, we can actually hear what we are playing, and see the difference one person can make to the sound (or didn't you just say that?).

If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium, or for those of you who did not see that movie that included Donovan doing a cameo and a couple of tunes, I can do next Tuesday. Thursday, however would be a different movie.

From the sounds of things it looks like the stien is heading in the right direction. Fewer musicians and more listening to each other. Thats what it is all about fellas. Gind I to have found that my guitar playing has improved over the years since I started playing Mandolin. Not only will the chops help with your rythem, but I have found that since I started working daily on my flat picking for the mando my guitar leads are coming along nicely as well. Glad to see you guys are haveing so much fun with your new configuration. All the best and hope to see you guys soon.

OK I admit it I am Tony Fragio. I was using my laptop in Florida so you could not recognize the remote name (I'm sure Tommy was going thru the last year trying to find it!). With respect to the Tolstoynian emails I had to go through this morning, all I can say is I've never in all the years I've known Larry seen him this verbose////and that's saying something.
