  • We Bid You Goodnight

Next jam is next Wednesday or Thursday, April 5 or 6.  This needs to be confirmed.  The week after I have my monthly meeting on Tuesday the 11th of April so we should try to plan around that.

Hells Freaks
The whole band was there to experience an exhilarating night of raucous music.  Kevin was back from his trip from Arizona and was ready to give it as big as the boulders out there are.  Kev gave it to us so big that it drove Larry out by the second set.  It was a wise move because contrary to the fictitious second set I posted above, there was no second set.  We did a lot of lounging around instead.

Guests included John's friend Dave for a few songs and Tefillin-Ken hung out for the whole night,  You would have figured he would of figured out how to get a second set out of us but the best he got was listening to Dave strum You Never Can Say Goodbye.

Scott got some new heads for his drums and also one for the conga but he still needs one for the quinta.  He had a good moment or two harmonizing with Larry back there.  Dave also had a good Box of Rain and Let it Grow.  For all the so-called volume problems there were some hot moments including the El Paso and the Box of Rain.  The Straw also had some positive energy.

We had a typical Delicizo order and the pizza was really well done,  Scott had the ravioli I had veal parm and there were rice balls, you bet.  There was no butter but lots of bread.  I brought in bugles and cookies.

In the world, the weather was non-descript but there is lots of action in sports.  The 11 year tenure of Neil Smith and the Rangers came to a close as the #1 payroll in the league failed to make the playoffs for the third straight year.  On the other hand, the Mets begin their quest for a world series as they start the season this morning at 5:30 am from Tokyo.  Go Mets Go!

That's about it for now.  I'm off to Mexico this week so see you in two, but it can't be Tuesday the 11th. Till then.

The Mets were not off to a good start as I came in to work this morning. 5-3 loss. I believe a Cub with a broken finger hit a homerun.

I remember an interview with Garcia where he said something to the effect that Phil was in the habit of driving him crazy sometimes on stage. Apparantly he would be of the opinion that Phil's playing was wrong or too loud or two soft or whatever. I remember him saying he often wanted to run across the stage a strangle Phil, only to realize upon playback of the tape that is was actually genius.

Is there a motto in there somewhere? Lets try another one....

In sales here if we're having a bad month, the tendancy is to look ahead to the next and basically give up. Time after time business comes in after close and we're tought to "never throw in the towel". That has become our war cry and I think certain people in this band would benefit from that attitude.

That comment about Jerry being upset with Phil is from an interview in the Gratful Dead movie c.1974. Here at the MCMUA we use the "butterfly" analogy. When you chase a butterfly around you never seem to catch it as it flitter's by but when you least expect it the buterfly lands on your shoulder. The motto is don't try to hard to achieve something unachievable, just do the best that you can, make the others around you better and before you know it you achievied what you were hoping for without an frustrating effort. Have confidence there is a positive future and the future will be positive.

well let me change the topic and put an abrupt end to that discussion...for now------last night something happened that had far more negative implications for me than any sound quaility problems that may occur-----the use of the word N----R to discribe anyone black no less to say it in a way that leads one to believe one does not deserve equality because they are black is abhorrent to me---as in "ah he's just a N----R anyway...and while i haven't seen evidence of any overt bigotry in the band, as a group or for any individual, using that expression even to give the aura of superiority needed to boost ones fragile ego is something i will not stand for and certainly never choose to be around---i've left girlfriends because of it, stop hanging out with friends over it, and have had my fair share of heated debates over it---maybe its a good thing larry and i will be separated for a few weeks----sorry but this is how i feel---------AND DAMN KEVIN TO HELL IF HE EVER PLAYS SO LOW ON A WEST LA AGAIN

Sorry to have stirred anything of this nature, I personally think racism is about action and interaction between individuals, and that particular word, sensitive as it may be to some, does have many different usages, among them a term of endearment amongst "homies". I apologize profusely to anyone I may have offended with anything I said and it was certainly not intentional. However, I would hate for this to be the focus of discussion regarding an evening in which I found myself trying and wanting to play as loud and obnoxious as I possibly could. I played wrong notes on purpose out of disrespect for my total inability to make any kind of statement in the room last night, musically, vocally, orally and in any other sense. Thank G-d no one I invited was present for that monstrosity. I don't see what the remaining members could possibly hope to accomplish next week without the Gind and Trister so I surrender now. I reccommend a night of Zep etc. with Dave on Bass, Kevy on guitar etc and Larry B safe and sound in NJ resting up for Phil.

Let us not forget the when we all enjoyed when talking about the Mets playing in Japan and the comments about "Praying Ball." Then I asked Johnny if his bosses at work tell him to "stop praying around." He said no so then I turned to Tefillin-Ken and asked him the same question. He didn't understand it, Only Rich did. With all that said the Japanese people deserve an apology and I give it. I'm undecided if the joke to Tefillin-Ken is offensive or not. I don't think so, we should rejoice in praying, not playing so maybe it was complementary. I'm on the fence on that one.

Maybe we should just shut up and eat during dinner?

I find it absolutely amazing that after 9 years of playing and doing the same thing every week we still can find something new to turn into a psychedelic-melodrama.

I agree, let's not focus on LLBrent's incredibly stupid comment, he obviously has a full understanding regarding the etymology and cultural significance of that word, and it is only a small symptom in the greater disease of his terminal Neg. How anyone can find so much unhappiness in Deadstein is beyond me. LLBrent tends to aim the majority of his frustration at me; volume, style of play, etc. - and that's cool with me, because I can take it and because I love him and I truly want him to be happy. LLBrent seemed unusually agitated this week and I actually turned down significantly for him, but to no avail. He was still mysteriously miserable. You know what though? It's OK to be unhappy in Deadstein. Dave was unhappy in Deadstein and he left. Menaker was unhappy, and he left. Problem --> Solution. You know what though? I don't want LLBrent to leave. I wish he could just have fun like the rest of us. I have gone out of my way since Andy Fischman's basement party, where LLBrent and I started discussing his dissatisfaction with his sound and playing, to try and help him achieve solace. That was 8 years ago, and after changes in Amps, pick-ups, strings, effects, GTR synth, personnel, venue, repertoire, addictions, Jerry's existence, my amp and placement, there is no progress. Now LLBrent is playing bad on purpose? What the fuck is that? - It's retarded. Who appointed LLBrent immature, irrational judge and jury? "I think it sounds bad, so I'll play bad. That will make a statement."--what kind of logic is that? (p.s. no one else thought it sounded bad.) Still shrouded beneath his veil of discontent, LLBrent has deemed the rest of us (sans TheGind & Trister) underachievers and a waste-of-time, and given us the OK to play loud. Thanks. But, you know what though? Don't tell me what to do. I think that might be moral of this freaky-fable. Stop worrying about other people and concentrate on what you can control (that should be yourself.) You can't change what others do, you can only change your reaction to them. e.g. I want LLBrent to be happy.

In previous posts some philosophies and motto's were suggested, here's my two cents: "Kindness, Friendship, Comedy & Music." "Don't worry; be happy" "Might as well" "Shut up and play yer guitar"

God bless.

This is getting boring.

I must admit, Kevin brings up some valid points. I do not appreciate taking shit for leaving work early, paying two bucks a gallon to drive tho 100 plus miles round trip and give up my free time only to have Larry try to sabotage the sound and throw neg all over the room!

Please don't do that anymore. If you're having your musical menstrual period then take two motrins and stay home.

Mets win on Benny's Grand Slam!

What we do in that room is a living and breathing organism, said or unsaid, all attitude has a great impact. If you don’t like my disregard for the music than I apologize for that but, I certainly didn’t come into the room this week with any attitudinal or menstrual problems and my negativity was a direct result of what I was hearing and feeling in the room. Trister is right, this is getting boring, in many respects. For me perhaps I am bored of screaming to try and make any kind of musical statement is the midst of all cacophony. I know I loved it a few weeks ago the night we did Dark Star & She Belongs to Me (and by the way, I was in the midst of a total computer meltdown in the office that week and in a miserable state of mind that night) but that as a totally different animal. I maintain that there is too much selfish overplaying and that this are contrary to the essence of the Dead’s music. How can we have arrived at the point where 40% of the band is playing in a power trio, what is that all about. You guys know I play by ear, I don’t know if any given note is gonna be right or not until I play it. I think I play the dynamic of the room and my playing was careless and sloppy and totally uninspired because that was what I was feeling and hearing. I did not feel that there was anything positive that I could contribute to what was going on so that is what and how I played. I apologize for not unplugging earlier and leaving to have avoided all this nonsense. Music is about sharing to create something greater that the sum of it is individual parts. That is what I thought we were trying to accomplish that is all I’m looking for. It is not about personalities or pizza just music.

That's right. It is no misprint. I am in my office and the time is 6:19 A.M., Friday morning. Dave and I had Peking Duck in Chinatown last night and I feel it all over my body. I would like to take this oppurtunity to let you all know that I've been pretty happy lately. I always try to remind myself that we, as human beings, are very fortunate to be living on this wonderful earth. Ah, the splendor. Through the Deadstein years, we've all shared the feelings that what we Deadstein guys have is very unique and special. Rejoice in our understanding of the special times that we have. Yay.

Steele..

Tarpon are an inshore species. We we drifting live shrimp just south of Government Cut (the mouth of Miami Harbor/Biscayne Bay) maybe 300 yards from shore. The biggest Tarpon took about 25 minutes to bring to leader, and that was with us chasing him. The sailfish are offshore, but in Florida the blue water (Gulf Stream) is only a couple of miles offshore. That's what makes Florida such a great fishery...up here we have to Travel up to 70 miles offshore to find the blue water which can be pretty goddam grueling.

The Tennesse Jed and Morning Dew brought screams that gave you chills on your shnutts!! Last show tonight - anybody got my miracle NYC??? :)
